Captain’s Picks

With the Ryder Cup just weeks away the European Captain Olazabal named his 2 picks to join the already selected 10 players to form the 2012 team. A decision that turned out to be much simpler following Garcia’s win at Wyndam. The debate was always going to centre on whether Olazabal chose Garcia a long-term friend, or went with another player. However Garcia’s emphatic win at Wyndam meant that he knocked Poulter out of automatic qualification. With Poulter’s impressive Ryder Cup record he was practically guaranteed a Captain’s pick therefore making the job of Olazabal just that bit simpler.

The remaining pick was seemingly between two players, Harrington and Colsaerts. Harrington the 3 time major winner has shown patches of form this year and an impressive 64 on the opening round of The Barclays was a prime example, however he followed this with a 75 which all but handed the remaining pick to Colsaerts.

Colsaerts who has had a great season including a win at the Volvo Match Play has a long hitting game, which Olazabal sees as an advantage on the long Medinah course and subsequently got the Captain’s seal of approval.

Colsaerts who just 4 years ago was ranked outside the top 1000 players has had a remarkable journey. “I am living proof if you want something badly, put the work in and have passion, it can happen,” he said.

I spent a day working with Colsaerts a couple of years ago at Gleneagles analysing his equipment using my FlightScope®; it was a very impressive display of ball striking mixed with raw power.

So as it turns out a relatively easy start for Olazabal compared to 2 years ago when Monty left out Rose and Casey for the 2010 duel at Celtic Manor. However in the weeks to come Olazabal is sure to be tested if we are to bring the Ryder Cup home once again.

Good luck boys, I will be glued to the TV!
