The Function of the Right Arm

I have just come back from Orlando where I spent a week with David and Danny Lee of Gravity Golf. During the week I spent some time working on the function of my right arm. The practice payed off and I played some great golf towards the end of the week. The function of the right arm is one of the most difficult things to learn in the golf swing. The shoulder and elbow joints leave us with almost endless amounts of potential movements. However, there is only one position where the right arm allows you to create effortless power and maximise distance.

To find the most efficient position for your right arm I recommend you hit one-handed shots. Begin by making practice swings with a short iron. To start with this will feel a little strange as your right arm moves away from your body.

But this width is exactly what you are trying to create. If you were attempting to throw a golf ball as far as possible, you wouldn’t be able to create very much power if you kept your right arm against the side of your body.

As you become comfortable hitting one-handed shots with a short iron, you should move up the bag to make the practice more challenging with the aim to be able to hit your driver.
