Winter Project, week 5

5 weeks have now been and gone and I can’t quiet believe how fast the time has passed. I have just come back from a fantastic trip to Orlando, I spent a week with David and Danny Lee from Gravity Golf working on my game and also discussing coaching techniques. To coincide with my distance goals for the off-season we worked on my right arm routing and counterfall. The right arm routing is a very important part of the golf swing and allows you to feel a connection between the club and body. It’s a particularly hard part of the body to train as the shoulder joint has so many planes of movement and it was great to get the guys to look at mine.

Once a connection is formed the body is then able to turn onto the ball with the club following. To hit the ball further the body needs to rotate faster, but before the body can rotate the counterfall must be initiated.

The counterfall is something that you wont hear discussed in golfing literature but it is crucial if you want your body to rotate with speed whilst remaining in balance. The counterfall is a leaning back movement at the start of the downswing, which stops the weight of your arms and club pulling you towards the ball as you rotate.

As the speed of rotation increases so does the effective weight of your arms and club therefore to go faster you need to lean back further.

How quick?

We will have to wait and see when I next get on the launch monitor. One thing that will slow my progress is the extra weight that was added to the clubhead. David felt that my driver was out of balance and we stuck some lead tape on the head. In the short term this will slow the clubhead down, but in the long term once I get used to the new weight it should allow me to go faster!
