Winter Project, week 2

I am now two weeks in to my winter training project and things are moving along nicely. The gym work is going well, 45 minutes, 3 times a week is not too taxing and isn’t affecting my practice at all. Of the 4 compound moves I am doing, 3 are going great with the weight increasing each session. My squat is the compound move that is currently not going to plan. Having taken a look on YouTube and done various flexibility tests, it appears my ankles aren’t up to scratch. To help rectify this lack of mobility I have added a couple of stretches in an evening and I’m also using a foam roller on my calves when at the gym. I hope to be doing squats by the time I write my next update in a few weeks time.

As for the Golf there are definite signs of improvement. I took my Flightscope down to Carus and having hit 10 drivers my new average swing speed was 102 mph an improvement of 5 mph.

I have been focusing my practice on the two-footed front route drill and I am pleased with the speed increase. What is more intriguing is that the smash factor has increased and therefore the ball speed is up a total of 10mph.

This increase in my Smash is likely to be caused by having more mass rotating at impact. This is one of the key principles of the Gravity Golf system and if I am to increase clubhead speed further my body is going to have to learn to rotate faster.

One consequence to this additional speed is that my ball flight with the driver is now a little high. Before speeding things up my driver was set up perfectly for me, now I am loosing 20 yards due to the higher launch and increased spin. This isn’t going to stop me speeding up over the winter but before the start of next season this will be something that needs rectifying.

What do the next few weeks have in store? In 10 days time I am flying out to Orlando for a week with David and Danny Lee of Gravity Golf for some coaching, practice and a few rounds of golf. I am very much looking forward to spending time with them both, working on my own game and further building on my coaching knowledge. I will post my next update when I get back.

Happy golfing!
